Glasgow Rangers parted company with sporting director Kevin Thelwell at the start of last week, bringing his tenure to an end after just one transfer window in charge.
During the summer, the former Everton chief was handed a sizeable budget and invested £8 million in Youssef Chermiti—Rangers’ most expensive signing since Tore André Flo arrived for £12 million in 2000. However, the Portugal U21 striker has struggled to adapt, scoring only once in 15 appearances across all competitions, according to Sofascore.
With Thelwell gone and Danny Röhl now steering the team, Rangers are reportedly preparing to reshape the squad assembled during the summer window.
Rangers’ January transfer plans
TEAMtalk reports that Röhl wants to bring in three major additions in January: a striker, a dynamic central midfielder, and a versatile full-back. While no individual names have surfaced, the former Sheffield Wednesday manager has already been scouting options and is expected to receive strong financial backing from the club’s owners.
Crucially, Röhl is said to be targeting a proven goalscorer who can make an immediate impact—rather than another long-term project signing similar to Chermiti. Miovski’s strong form for Aberdeen prior to joining Rangers suggested he could be that reliable goalscorer, but things haven’t clicked so far. The forward has only one Premiership goal in 11 games this season.
Why Rangers could consider selling Bojan Miovski
Given Röhl’s desire to bring in an established striker, Rangers may need to create space in their attacking lineup. Miovski, who arrived for an initial £2.6 million fee in the summer, could be the player most at risk.
Although Chermiti has also struggled in front of goal, his all-round contribution has been stronger. He has won 43% of his duels and 52% of his aerial battles in league play, compared with Miovski’s 32% success rate in ground duels and 31% in the air. Chermiti is also five years younger and represented a larger financial investment, giving the club more incentive to continue developing him.
With that in mind, Rangers may decide that selling Miovski in January is the most logical way to open the door for the proven No. 9 Röhl wants—one who can lead the line consistently in the second half of the season.
