Wilfried Nancy has sparked anger among Celtic supporters after stating he is “not about losing or winning” during his first post-match interview as manager.
The French coach, who arrived from MLS champions Columbus Crew earlier this week, watched his new side fall 2–1 to Hearts in his dugout debut. It was a tough introduction for the 48-year-old, with the Jambos capitalising on defensive lapses to move three points clear at the top of the Premiership.
Reflecting on the defeat, Nancy focused heavily on performance rather than the scoreline.
He said: “I’m not about losing and winning. I’m about having a good performance. Of course we all want to win and I want to win, but for me it’s about what we can do better. The result wasn’t what we wanted, but I thought we had a strong first half. We created chances, we broke well, and could have scored. The final pass and execution could have been better, but I liked how we unbalanced them.”
He reiterated his stance again:
“The most important thing for me is if the players give everything — then what can we improve? In attack, in defence, in mindset. If we get those things right, the results will follow.”
His comments, however, did not sit well with many Celtic fans, who immediately voiced their frustration online.
One supporter wrote: “You’re managing the wrong team if you’re not about winning and losing. At Celtic, every game must be a win.”
Another added: “It’s all about winning at Celtic. Nothing else.”
A third said: “He’ll learn quickly — in Glasgow it is about losing or winning. What a statement to make.”
A fourth posted: “Probably the worst thing to say after that performance. Unreal.”
And another fumed: “This isn’t the MLS, this is Celtic Football Club. Wild comment.”
Some supporters even went as far as predicting an early exit for Nancy, despite it being just his first match in charge.
Nancy, meanwhile, stressed that he simply wants to build structure and improve:
“I thought if we kept pushing, it could have been different. I wanted to adjust things to help organise the team — that’s all.”
