I’ve seen what a truly lethal Rangers striker looks like and believe me, Bojan fits that mould

Steve Agnew knows exactly what a top Rangers striker looks like — he worked with Nikica Jelavic, after all. And after coaching Bojan Miovski at close quarters, he’s certain the North Macedonian forward has everything required to thrive at Ibrox.

The former Aberdeen assistant holds Miovski in such high regard that he even gave Manchester City a glowing report during his time at Pittodrie. That endorsement played a part in securing the striker’s £6 million switch from Aberdeen to Girona.

Miovski reminded everyone of his talent with a brace against Kilmarnock in Saturday’s 3-0 win. Speaking about his time with the striker, Agnew said:

“I really enjoyed working with Bojan. Barry Robson spoke highly of him before I arrived, and I quickly saw why. He’s a natural No. 9 and an excellent finisher. When you work with him daily, you notice how often he gets himself into shooting positions — and almost always hits the target.”

Agnew spent a year with Miovski during his prolific spell at Aberdeen, where he netted 44 goals in two seasons, and insists he is among the most clinical players he has coached.

“He’s one of the best natural finishers I’ve been around,” Agnew continued. “He’s mainly left-footed, really sharp in the box, and every time the ball reaches him in those areas, you think: ‘Goal.’ He’s calm, composed, and keeps his balance. I think he’ll be a huge asset for Rangers.”

Having coached a string of top strikers — including Alfonso Alves, Shane Long and Jelavic — Agnew says Miovski is technically superior to the former Rangers star.
“Jela was strong and aggressive, whereas Bojan is all about movement and finding pockets of space.”

Miovski has had a mixed start to life in Glasgow, but Agnew believes he just needs rhythm.

“People say his style is counter-attacking, but he simply plays on defenders’ shoulders. If the service is right, his first touch and timing are excellent. Even against deep blocks, he finds gaps.”

The former Aberdeen coach highlighted how well Miovski linked with Leighton Clarkson at Pittodrie and believes something similar can happen under Danny Röhl.

“He’s already spoken about needing a consistent run of games, and I agree — once he gets going, he’ll score regularly. His attitude is spot on.”

Agnew, who has coached at Aston Villa, Newcastle, Leeds and Middlesbrough, is confident Röhl can unlock the very best from the striker.

“Most forwards today need encouragement. Danny will know how to get the best out of him. And once Bojan gets that confidence and starts hitting the net, he can go on a real run.”
