Bristol City boss Gerhard Struber delivers injury update ahead of Coventry trip
Bristol City return to Championship action on Saturday with a challenging away match against league leaders Coventry City at the CBS Arena.
The Robins head into the weekend on the back of a spirited 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Wednesday night. After falling 2-0 behind to goals from Jordan Ayew and Bobby De Cordova-Reid, City battled back with strikes from Mark Sykes and Emil Riis to earn a valuable point.
Gerhard Struber’s side sit 10th in the table after 20 matches, just one point outside the play-off places. Coventry, meanwhile, remain top of the standings ahead of Middlesbrough, making this a tough assignment for the visitors.
Zak Vyner injury concern
Bristol City were forced into an early change against Leicester after defender Zak Vyner came off with a knee issue. The centre-back, who has been a key figure this season and has also featured in midfield, will now be assessed before the trip to Coventry.
Struber explained the decision to withdraw him:
“Zaky felt something in his knee. He wasn’t 100 per cent after about 25 minutes, so it was important to protect him from a possible injury. We don’t know exactly what’s going on yet.”
The City boss added that the defender’s toughness could work in his favour as he pushes to be available:
“I have to speak with the medical team. A scan is possible, but Zaky is a strong character who can handle discomfort. Hopefully he’s ready for the next game.”
Vyner’s contract situation
Vyner’s future at Ashton Gate remains uncertain. Talks have taken place over a new deal, but his current contract expires at the end of the season, which would make him a free agent in June 2026.
He drew interest from Wrexham during the last transfer window after their promotion to the Championship, but a move never materialised. With January approaching, discussions over his long-term future are expected to continue.
A long-serving Robins stalwart
Vyner, 28, is a product of Bristol City’s academy and has spent his entire career with the club, aside from loan spells at Accrington Stanley, Plymouth Argyle, Rotherham United and Aberdeen. He has made 246 appearances in all competitions and scored four goals.
