Coventry City manager Frank Lampard provides insight into the club’s upcoming January transfer approach

Frank Lampard has suggested that Coventry City already have a clear strategy in place for the upcoming January transfer window as they continue their push for promotion.

The Sky Blues saw their advantage at the top of the Championship reduced to five points after drawing with 10-man Preston North End in midweek. They now return to the Coventry Building Society Arena to face Bristol City following back-to-back away games that produced just one point.

With the transfer window approaching, Lampard noted that the club will look at how previously promoted sides strengthened in January as they shape their own recruitment plans.

Lampard said: “We’re always preparing. Planning didn’t stop after the summer window — it continued straight away. If we want to stay competitive at the top end of the league, we have to study what successful teams did in January and identify the areas where we can add depth. The second half of the season is demanding, and we have to be ready.”

He added that he maintains a strong relationship with the club’s owner and believes everyone is aligned in their ambitions.

Looking ahead to Bristol City, Lampard stressed the need for continued improvement to maintain momentum.

“It’s worth remembering we’re five points clear at the top,” he said. “This time last year we were 17th. The progress we’ve made has been huge, but we need to keep improving weekly. Bristol are a quality side and play an unusual system with a back three, so we need to stay focused and stick to what we do best.”

Coventry host Bristol City on Saturday, December 13 at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
