Richard Keys believes Coventry City’s promotion push will face challenges as the Championship season progresses, insisting the race for the Premier League is far from settled.
Frank Lampard’s side moved five points clear at the top of the table after a narrow 1–0 victory over Bristol City on Saturday. Coventry also hold a commanding 12-point advantage over third-placed Preston North End, prompting growing belief that the Sky Blues are well on course for automatic promotion.
Despite that cushion, questions have been raised about squad depth, though the upcoming January transfer window offers an opportunity to strengthen. Keys, a long-time Coventry supporter, has urged caution, warning that tougher tests lie ahead.
The Sky Blues recently suffered a setback with a defeat to Ipswich Town and a draw against Preston, although a club legend was quick to play down fears of a downturn, with the Bristol City win restoring momentum. Still, Keys is convinced Coventry will encounter difficulties as the campaign unfolds, particularly with parachute-payment clubs finding form.
“This is a very tough league and we are going to hit problems at some point,” Keys said.
“All the parachute-payment teams are starting to get going now. We’re delighted with where we are, but it’s about taking each game as it comes and not looking too far ahead.”
Coventry’s next challenge comes against one of those financially boosted sides, with an away trip to Southampton looming. Ipswich — who recently thrashed the Sky Blues 3–0 — are also set to visit before the end of the month.
Should Coventry maintain their healthy buffer over third place heading into January, Lampard could look to add reinforcements to support a sustained promotion push in the second half of the season.
So far, Coventry’s attacking output has been a major strength. They have scored 52 goals in 21 league matches — comfortably the best return in the division, with Hull City next closest on 36.
