Wilfried Nancy’s tenure at Celtic under fire amid calls for him to be sacked

Wilfried Nancy Under Immediate Pressure at Celtic After Cup Final Shock

Wilfried Nancy is already battling to save his job at Celtic following Sunday’s stunning Scottish League Cup final defeat to St Mirren.

That’s the view of former Aberdeen, Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, who believes the new Celtic boss is facing a steep uphill task just weeks into his reign. Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Wyness suggested Nancy is already in serious trouble after overseeing a 3-1 loss to St Mirren — a result that has sparked calls from sections of the support for his immediate dismissal.

‘The jury is very much out’ on Nancy

Wyness, who ran Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004 and later held senior roles at Everton and Aston Villa before launching a football consultancy advising elite clubs, feels Nancy has moved too quickly to overhaul Celtic’s approach.

Appearing on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed Nancy has squandered his opportunity to make a positive first impression in Glasgow.

“It’s not the best start, and the question marks are already there,” Wyness said. “Celtic is a very tough environment, and it doesn’t seem sensible to arrive and immediately change the system without really settling in, properly working with the squad and understanding the players first.

“You only get one chance to make a first impression, and unfortunately, he’s blown it.”

The former executive also suggested Celtic could even be forced to consider bringing Martin O’Neill back again if they decide Nancy is not the right man to take the club forward, following O’Neill’s recent spell as interim boss.

Pressure set to intensify

The situation is unlikely to ease for Nancy any time soon. Three of Celtic’s next four fixtures are away from home, before a new-year showdown against Rangers. Meanwhile, Hearts have opened up a six-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership while Celtic were distracted by cup final duties.

With criticism growing over Nancy’s insistence on persisting with a three-at-the-back system during a critical phase of the season, the pressure on the Frenchman is already mounting — and further setbacks could leave Celtic with a major decision to make.
