Rangers continue to find themselves in trouble with the authorities.
Despite multiple warnings and sanctions, fans still used pyrotechnics during their recent 3-0 win over Kilmarnock, leaving a young supporter injured. The SPFL could respond with another away-ticket ban or fines, but these measures have historically had little effect. Some experts now warn that Rangers could even face points deductions if the behavior continues.
Football finance expert Dan Plumley told Ibrox News that harsher punishments, such as points deductions, may be the only way to stop recurring incidents. With Danny Rohl’s team still unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership, such a penalty would severely damage their slim title hopes. Plumley acknowledged that the SPFL and Scottish FA are unlikely to take such drastic action, but the repeated issues may leave them no choice.
“Fans won’t like it, but the only way to really stop these incidents is either a complete ban on away supporters or heavier punishments, including larger fines and potentially points deductions if things don’t improve,” Plumley said.
Rangers are currently preparing to face Hibernian in the Premiership on Monday, aiming to move into third place. A win would put them three points behind Celtic and nine behind Hearts, with a game in hand against the league leaders at Tynecastle coming next Sunday.
If Rangers can secure victories in their next two games, they could find themselves provisionally just three points behind Hearts, keeping the title race alive. With January transfers on the horizon, this week could prove pivotal for Rohl’s side — and no points deductions will be needed if the team performs.
