Canadian-American actor Ryan Reynolds plots surprise next move after Wrexham share sale

Ryan Reynolds is reportedly lining up a surprise new move in the world of elite sport after selling a portion of his shares in Wrexham AFC.

Earlier this month, Apollo Sports Capital (ASC), an affiliate of global asset management giant Apollo (NYSE: APO), was confirmed as a new minority investor in the Welsh club.

The investment will help fund the redevelopment of the STōK Cae Ras, including long-awaited work on the Kop Stand, as Wrexham continue their rapid rise.

While Reynolds and co-owner Rob McElhenney remain firmly involved at Wrexham, the partial sale of their shares has reportedly opened the door for the Hollywood star’s next major sporting venture.

Reynolds is already a high-profile figure in Formula 1, having joined McElhenney, Michael B. Jordan and others in acquiring a 24 per cent stake in the Alpine F1 team in 2023. Now, that investment could take a dramatic turn.

Reports suggest Alpine are in discussions over a potential move for former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. Horner, who was relieved of his role earlier this year after two decades in charge, is one of the most successful figures in modern F1 history, having overseen eight drivers’ championships and six constructors’ titles.

According to Racing News 365, Horner is believed to be considering a return to Formula 1 with backing from investors connected to Alpine. Dutch outlet De Telegraaf claims there is speculation that Otro Capital — which holds the 24 per cent stake in the team — may be exploring a sale, potentially creating an opening for Horner to re-enter the sport in a senior role.

Alpine’s ownership group includes several high-profile names, with celebrities such as Anthony Joshua and Rory McIlroy also linked to the team through the investment consortium.

If the move materialises, it would represent another bold step in Reynolds’ expanding sports portfolio, following the remarkable transformation of Wrexham from non-league side to global football story.

Horner, who lives with his wife Geri Halliwell-Horner at their Oxfordshire home, has yet to publicly comment on the reports — but speculation around his next move is rapidly gathering pace.
