Three managerial options Oxford United should consider after major Gary Rowett call

Oxford United are on the hunt for a new manager following the dismissal of Gary Rowett, and attention now turns to who could take charge at the Kassam Stadium. Here, we highlight three candidates the club should seriously consider.

The U’s confirmed Rowett’s departure after last weekend’s narrow 1–0 loss to Charlton Athletic. Appointed on December 22 to replace Des Buckingham, Rowett was tasked with steering Oxford to Championship safety — a mission he successfully completed in their first season back at that level.

However, the 2025/26 campaign has proven far more difficult. With Oxford sitting 22nd in the table and just two points adrift of safety, pressure mounted on the former Birmingham City and Millwall boss. After nearly 12 months in charge and a record of 1.14 points per game across 50 matches, the club opted to make a change.

With the search for a successor now underway, these are three managers Oxford United could target.

Michael Carrick

Having just parted company with a manager known for pragmatic football, Oxford may be wise to avoid a like-for-like replacement. One ambitious option would be former Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick.

Carrick earned plaudits for his attractive, possession-based approach at the Riverside and remains well respected despite leaving the club in the summer. While he would represent a high-profile appointment, the prospect of a long-term project — potentially including plans for a new stadium — could make Oxford an intriguing opportunity.

Oscar Hiljemark

Looking abroad has paid dividends for several Championship clubs in recent years, and Oxford could follow suit by considering Oscar Hiljemark.

The 33-year-old Swede is currently in charge of Elfsborg in the Allsvenskan and has already built an impressive CV, having previously enjoyed success with Aalborg BK in Denmark. Known for favouring a 3-4-3 system and a possession-focused style, Hiljemark fits the profile of a progressive coach.

A recent downturn in form — with just one win in his final 10 matches of the 2025 season — could make him more attainable, potentially placing Oxford in a strong position to make a move.

Michael Skubala

Rounding off the shortlist is Lincoln City manager Michael Skubala, who has made a strong impression in his first senior managerial role.

Working with limited resources, Skubala has guided Lincoln to second place in the table and earned praise for his tactical approach and player development skills, honed during his time at Leeds United’s academy. Oxford have previously shown they are willing to recruit managers from rival English clubs, making him a realistic option.
