Breaking: Celtic reveal Maeda price tag amid European club approach

Celtic are prioritising potential arrivals ahead of the January transfer window, but attention may also need to be paid to possible departures.

Wilfried Nancy is keen to strengthen his squad in several key areas, with wing-back and centre-forward positions among the main priorities. However, one of his current attacking options, Daizen Maeda, continues to attract interest from abroad.

Maeda came close to leaving Celtic in the summer when a move to Wolfsburg was discussed, later revealing that he felt prevented from departing. Despite Nancy insisting the Japanese international is happy at the club, that has not stopped further interest from emerging.

While the financial details of the Wolfsburg talks were never made public, Celtic’s lack of depth in attack at the time made approving the deal difficult. Under Nancy’s system, recruiting the right players has become even more important, particularly if the club are to maintain their title challenge.

According to reports in Turkey, Trabzonspor have now requested the terms of a potential deal for Maeda. Takagazette claim the forward, who recently turned 28, has been given a valuation of €14 million and could be available if the financial package meets Celtic’s expectations.

On paper, that fee would represent strong business, but Maeda’s importance to the team raises questions over whether selling him would be wise. Celtic previously accepted a £10 million offer for Kyogo Furuhashi, a deal many viewed as sensible at the time, yet the club has struggled to replace his goals since.

In Maeda’s case, his relentless work rate, pressing and movement — particularly in European matches — make him a vital component of the side, arguably even beyond his goal contribution.

Since Nancy’s arrival, Maeda has started every match, underlining his importance. Speaking recently, the Celtic boss was asked about Maeda’s best position and suggested his versatility is one of his biggest strengths.

Nancy explained that Maeda can be effective both out wide and through the middle, noting his intelligent movement, willingness to run beyond defenders and ability to combine with teammates. He added that Maeda thrives when surrounded by the right players and offers tactical flexibility, whether attacking from the wing or making runs through the centre.

With interest growing and a price now reportedly set, Celtic may face a decision in January — one that could test their resolve to keep a key figure in Nancy’s evolving system.
