Breaking news: Rangers target high-profile signing as Danny Rohl looks to make first addition

Rangers have identified AEK Athens left-back James Penrice as a potential target for the January transfer window, according to the Daily Record.

The former Hearts star, who was named Hearts’ Player of the Year last season before moving to Greece, has struggled to make a major impact at AEK and could be set for a return to Scottish football.

The Glasgow giants have endured a difficult campaign, which led to the early departure of Russell Martin and the appointment of Danny Rohl, who has since steadied the side.

With the German manager keen to shape the squad in his own image, strengthening the left-back position has become a priority, especially after Derek Cornelius was ruled out for six weeks with a Canada injury.

Rangers’ technical director, Dan Purdy, has reportedly been tasked with assessing Penrice’s performances in Greece ahead of a possible January swoop.

Penrice would provide a natural option at left-back, supplementing the club’s reliance on young loanee Jayden Meghoma this season, and benefits from existing agency connections with players such as James Tavernier and Bailey Rice.

Other targets, including Belgium Under-21 international Tuur Rommens, have also been considered, but Penrice is emerging as one of the club’s primary options in the position.
