Birmingham City are closing in on what could become their first signing of the January transfer window as they push for a place in the Championship play-offs. According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Blues are “close” to securing a deal for Philadelphia Union left-back Kai Wagner.
With the window now open, Birmingham are eager to strengthen their squad and add depth in key areas. Wagner, 28, has been a standout performer in Major League Soccer since joining Philadelphia Union in 2019. During his time in the United States, the German defender has made 253 appearances across all competitions, contributing 10 goals and an impressive 54 assists from defence.
Plettenberg reports that Wagner is ready for a new challenge and is set to make the move to England this winter, with Birmingham believed to have activated his £2 million release clause. If completed, the deal would mark a significant early statement from the Midlands club as they look to climb the Championship table.
Birmingham City earned promotion from League One last season alongside Wrexham and Charlton Athletic, storming to the title under head coach Chris Davies. The Blues most recently shared the points in a 1-1 draw with Southampton, with defender Phil Neumann on the scoresheet at St Andrew’s.
Birmingham City set to bolster left-back options
The Blues have been keen to add competition at left-back, where Alex Cochrane has carried much of the responsibility due to ongoing injury issues suffered by Lee Buchanan. Wagner’s arrival would offer both depth and quality in that position, easing the burden on Cochrane while also providing an attacking outlet from the back.
Wagner began his career in Germany with spells at SV Lonsee, SSV Ulm, FC Augsburg, Schalke and Würzburger Kickers before moving to MLS seven years ago. Since then, he has established himself as one of Philadelphia Union’s most valuable players, making his potential departure a notable loss for the American side.
For Birmingham, however, Wagner’s experience and proven attacking output could prove invaluable during the second half of the season as they chase a top-six finish.
What next for Birmingham City?
The Blues will be eager to wrap up the Wagner deal quickly and turn their attention to further reinforcements. While defensive depth has been a priority, additional attacking options could also be on the agenda as the club looks to improve its consistency.
Backed by ambitious ownership, Birmingham City are expected to be active throughout January. Davies’ side return to action on New Year’s Day with a challenging trip to Vicarage Road to face Watford, where they will look to build on their draw against Southampton and kick off 2026 with a positive result.
