Danny Röhl has made it clear to Andrew Cavenagh that signing a new left-back is a top priority for Rangers during the January transfer window.
The Light Blues have been monitoring Westerlo defender Tuur Rommens as they look to strengthen their defensive options, while AEK Athens left-back James Penrice is also under consideration. Penrice, formerly of Hearts, is a player who previously caught the eye of Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson during their respective spells in the Ibrox dugout.
Röhl is planning a busy winter window and is keen to add multiple reinforcements. Sky Sports journalist Adam Binnie reports that a number of meetings have already taken place between Röhl and Cavenagh at Ibrox, during which transfer targets were discussed. Rommens, Penrice and former Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass are all believed to be on Rangers’ current shortlist.
Speaking on Sky Sports News on January 2, Binnie said: “Röhl has held a series of meetings with Cavenagh and others to outline what he wants. It will surprise nobody that left-back is a priority for Rangers. Rommens is a player being tracked, as is Penrice.”
While Windass remains a player of interest, Rangers would need to reach an agreement with Wrexham before any move could materialise. Binnie added that Röhl is also keen to strengthen in central midfield and attacking areas, with negotiations for Windass still uncertain after an initial loan approach was rejected.
Despite that setback, Rangers have not ruled out the possibility of reuniting Röhl with Windass at Ibrox. Elsewhere, Tromsø midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl has emerged as a major target, with the club potentially needing to make a significant investment to land the highly rated 20-year-old Norway Under-21 international.
Defensive midfielder Daylam Meddah, currently with Pau FC, is also being considered, although it remains unclear how many additions Rangers will ultimately make this month. Röhl will be hoping smart recruitment can reinvigorate his squad, reignite their season, and mount a serious challenge to Hearts in the William Hill Premiership.
With the right signings, there is belief within the club that Rangers can still push for the league title this season.
