Why Svante Ingelsson Missed Sheffield Wednesday’s Defeat to QPR

Svante Ingelsson was a notable omission from Sheffield Wednesday’s matchday squad for Sunday’s 3-0 loss to QPR at Loftus Road, but head coach Henrik Pedersen has confirmed the midfielder was absent due to illness.

The Swedish midfielder’s absence stood out given his consistency this season. In fact, it was the first time Ingelsson had failed to feature in a Championship matchday squad since Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Stoke City at Hillsborough in December 2024. A near ever-present in the Owls’ midfield, his unavailability was a clear setback.

Ingelsson was replaced in the starting lineup by Jamal Lowe, who himself had recently been rested before coming off the bench during the New Year’s Day defeat to Preston North End.

Pedersen clarified after the QPR match that Ingelsson was not sidelined by injury and has not added to the club’s growing injury concerns. Instead, the midfielder became unwell shortly after the loss at Preston, less than 72 hours before the trip to London.

While missing such an influential player was a blow against Julien Stéphan’s side, Pedersen acknowledged that the enforced break could ultimately benefit the former Hansa Rostock man.

“He was sick, he has a fever,” Pedersen told The Star. “I spoke with him yesterday morning and again in the evening. On Thursday night, he wasn’t good.”

When asked whether the rest could prove useful, Pedersen was full of praise for Ingelsson’s contribution.

“Yes, he has done an amazing job for us. He always works hard and is a great example for the culture here. He has been very, very important for us.”
