Rangers player frozen out of training after reaching transfer agreement

Rangers winger Oscar Cortés looks set to be on the move again after a difficult loan spell in Spain, with an agreement now in place for his next destination.

Cortés joined Sporting Gijón on loan in August after making three appearances for Rangers earlier in the season. However, his time in the Segunda División has been hugely disappointing.

The Colombian has featured in just five league matches, clocking up a total of only 112 minutes, and both parent club Rangers and Sporting Gijón are dissatisfied with how the move has unfolded.

As a result, the Spanish side are keen to terminate his loan during the winter window. Due to FIFA regulations, Cortés cannot sign for another club whose season began in July or August, meaning his next move must be to a league where the campaign is only just starting.

Spanish outlet AS report that Cortés is now heading to Argentina, with Club Atlético Huracán emerging as his next club. Journalist César Luis Merlo claims the 22-year-old will leave Sporting Gijón to join Huracán on loan, with an option included to make the move permanent. Colombian outlet AS have echoed those claims and state that a deal has already been agreed in principle.

Further confirmation has come from La Voz de Asturias, who report that Cortés’ representative has successfully arranged his exit to the Argentine club.

Despite the agreement, the transfer is not yet complete. Sporting Gijón must first officially end Cortés’ current loan before Rangers can sanction a new temporary move to South America.

In the meantime, Cortés has been training away from the first-team group. He did not take part in Sporting Gijón’s main training session on Monday, instead working alone, and is expected to continue doing so until his loan is formally terminated.

Marca also report that the Rangers-owned winger has been left out of training because he is no longer part of Sporting Gijón’s plans. They add that while his departure is expected, it may not happen immediately, though no clear reason for a potential delay has been provided.
