Preston star nears Deepdale exit with Hannover 96 medical underway

Stefan Thordarson’s January departure from Preston North End is moving closer as the midfielder edges towards an exit from Deepdale.

The Lancashire Evening Post reports that the 27-year-old is currently in Germany undergoing a medical with 2. Bundesliga outfit Hannover 96, as he nears a permanent switch to Die Roten.

An agreement has already been reached between the two clubs on all terms of the deal, including a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £800,000 — similar to the sum Preston paid Silkeborg in 2024 to sign the Iceland international.

Since arriving at Deepdale, the 24-cap midfielder has made 64 appearances in a North End shirt, registering three goals and three assists.

Once the medical is completed, Thordarson will become the second Preston player to leave during the current transfer window. Harrison Armstrong has already exited the club after Everton recalled the loanee to help address their midfield issues.

Despite featuring regularly last season — making 39 Championship appearances as Preston finished 20th and secured survival on the final day — Thordarson has struggled for game time this term. Paul Heckingbottom’s side are firmly in the promotion hunt, and the midfielder has found opportunities increasingly limited.

Hannover made their initial approach for Thordarson at the very start of the January window, prompting Preston to grant the player permission to hold talks with Christian Titz’s side.

While a busy window is not anticipated at Deepdale, the club are expected to strengthen, with funds from Thordarson’s sale set to aid their plans. There also remains the possibility of Armstrong returning to Preston later in the window.

Thordarson had 18 months remaining on his North End contract. His most recent appearance came as a late substitute in the 84th minute against Oxford United on December 13, and he has not been included in the matchday squad for Preston’s last four fixtures.
