Glasgow Rangers midfielder Connor Barron delivered another standout performance for Danny Röhl’s side on Tuesday night, providing two assists in a 2-0 Scottish Premiership victory over Aberdeen at Ibrox.
The Scotland international was deadly from set pieces, supplying precise deliveries that allowed Emmanuel Fernandez and Nicolas Raskin to find the net against the Dons.
Barron has now started 13 of his 19 league appearances this season, according to Sofascore, having also been a regular starter during his debut campaign at the club, where he featured from the outset in 23 of his 28 Premiership outings.
Since arriving at Ibrox in the summer of 2024 following the expiry of his contract at Aberdeen, Barron has proven to be a smart acquisition. His familiarity with the league allowed him to settle quickly and consistently perform at a high level for the Gers.
Rangers interest remains in James Penrice
Barron’s success highlights the benefits of recruiting players with proven Premiership experience, and Rangers could be looking to repeat that formula in the January transfer window. According to TEAMtalk, the club remain keen on AEK Athens left-back James Penrice.
The report claims Rangers have already seen one bid rejected for the former Hearts defender, but their interest has not cooled. The Ibrox side are expected to return with an improved offer in the coming days as they look to strengthen Röhl’s squad.
Crucially, Penrice is said to be open to a move back to Scotland and is keen on joining Rangers this month, suggesting personal terms would not present a major obstacle.
Why Penrice could follow the Barron blueprint
Penrice’s situation mirrors Barron’s in many ways. Like the Rangers midfielder, the 27-year-old is a proven Premiership performer who understands the demands of Scottish football and would likely adapt quickly if a move to Ibrox materialises.
While Rangers have benefited from uncovering less familiar talents such as Hamza Igamane, signing established domestic players carries far less risk. They come with a level of reliability and consistency that can be invaluable during the business end of the season.
Penrice earned his move to AEK Athens last summer after impressing with Hearts during the 2024/25 Premiership campaign.
His experience in both Scotland and Greece makes him a well-rounded defensive option who could make an immediate impact if Rangers succeed in bringing him back north.
