Derek Ferguson tells Rangers to ditch high-earning forward and keep Nicolas Raskin

Rangers have re-entered the Scottish Premiership title race, with the January transfer window set to play a crucial role in shaping their push for silverware.

The Gers now sit just three points behind Hearts at the top of the table as they chase only their second league title since returning to the top flight. While new signings are expected at Ibrox this month, departures are also likely as the club looks to manage its finances.

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson believes one outgoing should be clear, insisting the club would be better served moving on Danilo rather than cashing in on Nicolas Raskin. Danilo has seen his minutes reduced in recent weeks, often limited to brief substitute appearances after a series of disappointing performances earlier in the season.

Raskin has been frequently linked with a move away, but Ferguson argues he is not a player Rangers can afford to lose. Instead, he feels attention should turn to fringe players on high wages.

Ferguson said Rangers must be careful not to weaken the squad too much, particularly with injuries likely between now and the end of the campaign, but suggested Danilo fits the profile of a player who could be sold without significantly harming the team.

Statistically, the striker has struggled to make an impact.

While he is averaging 0.33 goals per game in the Premiership, his all-round contribution has been limited.

According to FotMob data from January 9, Danilo is completing just 75.4 per cent of his passes and creating fewer than one chance per match.

With Youssef Chermiti finding form and competition for places increasing, Danilo appears unlikely to reclaim a regular starting role. A January exit could therefore benefit both the player and the club as Rangers move into the second half of the 2025–26 season.
