Rangers target two Sunderland players as Danny Röhl eyes four new signings

Rangers are stepping up their January recruitment drive after reportedly making enquiries about Sunderland pair Romaine Mundle and Dan Neil, with Danny Röhl pushing ahead with plans for multiple new arrivals at Ibrox.

The Light Blues are already closing in on deals for left-back Tuur Rommens and midfielder Tochu Chukwuani, a double move expected to cost around £7.5 million.

However, reports suggest those signings may only be the start of a busy window for Röhl as he looks to rebuild following a difficult summer.

Long-term injuries to Dujon Sterling and Connor Barron have increased the urgency for reinforcements, while club figure Andrew Cavenagh recently indicated that strengthening at left-back, in midfield and in attacking areas are the club’s main priorities.

Rommens and Chukwuani are set to address two of those needs, but Rangers appear keen to go further.

According to Sky Sports, Rangers have made initial enquiries to Sunderland regarding midfielder Dan Neil and winger Romaine Mundle.

Neil captained the Black Cats to promotion last season, while Mundle — signed from Standard Liège for £2 million in 2024 — scored five Championship goals. Both, however, have struggled for regular minutes since Sunderland’s move up to the Premier League.

Sunderland boss Régis Le Bris has acknowledged he is open to finding new clubs for players who are not featuring consistently, potentially opening the door for Rangers to make their move.

Speaking at his press conference, Röhl confirmed that increasing goals across the team is a key objective this month — an area where Mundle could prove particularly useful.

“I think for me it’s not just about the No.9,” Röhl said. “In general, we have to increase our goals, and that’s an important aspect of what we look for in the market.

“We are looking at other positions as well. But let’s do the first job with the first two players and then see what we can do next. I can guarantee that we are also working on different positions.”

With enquiries made and multiple targets identified, Rangers look set for a hectic end to the January window as Röhl looks to reshape his squad.
