Newcastle United made repeated attempts to sign James Trafford over the past two summers before the goalkeeper ultimately returned to Manchester City.
The Magpies came close to landing the 23-year-old from Burnley in both recent transfer windows, with Trafford having already agreed personal terms on a move to St James’ Park.
A deal looked particularly likely in June 2024, only for it to collapse when Newcastle were forced into signing Odysseas Vlachodimos as part of a PSR-related arrangement with Nottingham Forest that saw Elliot Anderson move in the opposite direction.
Trafford, who spent eight years in Manchester City’s academy, originally left the Etihad to join Burnley for a reported £19 million before sealing a return to Pep Guardiola’s side.
Eddie Howe remains a big admirer
Despite the failed pursuits, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe remains a strong admirer of Trafford.

The England international began the season as Manchester City’s first-choice goalkeeper, but his opportunities have been limited following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, restricting him to just eight appearances in all competitions.
Asked about Newcastle’s previous interest and whether a future move could still materialise, Howe said:
“I think he’s a very, very good goalkeeper. I’m a big fan of his and I think Manchester City are really in a great position with the two goalkeepers that they have.
“They’ve probably got more than that, but the two that have been involved this season are fantastic goalkeepers.
“No, I don’t look at it that way. I wish him all the best in his career and if he plays tomorrow, we’ll look forward to going up against him.”
Trafford could start for City when they face Newcastle in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at St James’ Park.
Will Newcastle return for Trafford?
As reported last month, a renewed move for Trafford appears unlikely despite Howe’s admiration. Two major factors are understood to be standing in the way: Trafford’s wage demands and a strained working relationship between Newcastle and Manchester City, further complicated by City’s ongoing interest in Tino Livramento.
Newcastle’s current goalkeeping picture
After missing out on Trafford, Newcastle secured Aaron Ramsdale on a season-long loan from Southampton, with the deal including an option to make the move permanent for £20 million in the summer.
Howe is now spoiled for choice between Ramsdale and Nick Pope. Speaking ahead of the semi-final, he added:
“Yes, we’ll see. We’ll make a decision on that. I’m very happy with both goalkeepers.
“I thought it was a really nice moment for Aaron on Saturday. He had quite a bit to do in the game. I thought he did well. Big penalty saves, big moment.
“I’m sure that will endear him to everyone connected with the club.
“Nick’s come back into the team and done really well. We’ve got real strength and depth and two great professionals in such a key position.”
