Wrexham are expected to be active in the January transfer window after being encouraged to target a player from one of their Championship rivals.
The Red Dragons have been urged to consider a move for Norwich City striker Josh Sargent, following recent speculation surrounding his future at Carrow Road.
The 25-year-old forward has been linked with a potential exit after he was absent from Norwich’s squad for their FA Cup third-round victory over Walsall. Sargent had started the Canaries’ previous three league matches but did not feature as Norwich ran out 5-1 winners against the League Two side. Reports suggest MLS outfit Toronto FC are preparing a bid of around £13.5 million as the USA international looks to secure regular football ahead of this year’s World Cup on home soil.
Former Norwich and Wales striker Iwan Roberts believes Wrexham could be tempted to test the waters as they push toward the Championship play-off positions. While Roberts feels Sargent would improve most sides in the division, he also raised concerns over how the striker would fit into Phil Parkinson’s side, with Kieffer Moore already established as Wrexham’s leading forward.
Speaking on the Fearless in Devotion podcast, Roberts said Sargent’s quality is unquestionable, praising his ability to hold the ball up and score goals. However, he admitted he had some reservations about the striker’s recent actions, suggesting his refusal to be involved in the FA Cup could raise questions.
Roberts also noted that guaranteed minutes could be a sticking point, as Sargent will want to play regularly to boost his chances of making the United States World Cup squad. Despite backing the idea of a potential move, he stressed that Wrexham may not need to spend heavily this month, given the strength of their current squad.
Norwich manager Philippe Clement has insisted the club will not allow Sargent to leave during the January window and confirmed there could be repercussions for the player after making himself unavailable. Sargent has scored 56 goals in 157 appearances for the Canaries since joining from Werder Bremen in 2021.
Wrexham currently sit ninth in the Championship, just one point outside the play-off places, while Norwich are struggling near the bottom of the table ahead of their visit to north Wales this weekend.
