Rangers newcomer Tuur Rommens hit with debut delay after injury revelation

Tuur Rommens will have to be patient before making his Rangers debut after completing his move from Westerlo earlier this week.

The left-back became Rangers’ second signing of the January window, following the arrival of Tochi Chukwuani, with Andreas Skov Olsen expected to join next pending a successful medical.

While Rommens has officially been unveiled, his introduction to the team may take longer than initially anticipated.

Despite passing a medical, the 22-year-old is not yet fully fit. According to the Scottish Daily Mail, Rommens is still dealing with the effects of a previous knock.

Although he is technically available to play, Rangers are unwilling to take any risks and will hold him out of Friday’s Scottish Cup tie against Annan Athletic.

As a result, Jayden Meghoma is likely to continue at left-back for the time being, having already been heavily relied upon this season by head coach Danny Rohl. Rommens’ return will be carefully managed, and it could be another three to four weeks before he is fully up to speed.

While the injury situation may come as a surprise, Rangers view Rommens as a long-term signing and are keen to avoid unnecessary setbacks. The defender has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract at Ibrox, with the transfer fee believed to be around £3.5 million.

“I’m very happy to be here. It’s a dream to play for a club like this, and I only have positive feelings,” Rommens said after completing the move.

Capped at multiple youth levels for Belgium, including the Under-21s, Rommens is seen as a promising addition and could one day line up alongside fellow countryman Nicolas Raskin at senior international level. While little is widely known about him, the move appears to be an exciting and progressive piece of business for Rangers.

With Skov Olsen expected to follow, Rangers supporters will be hoping another new arrival is not far behind.
