Celtic make striker bid as Fabrizio Romano breaks transfer update

Celtic are reportedly competing with Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim in the race to sign highly-rated Irish youngster Michael Noonan.

The Hoops have struggled to hit top form in the Scottish Premiership this season and currently sit only a single goal ahead of rivals Rangers, while trailing surprise pace-setters Hearts by six points. With four consecutive league titles behind them, Celtic now face a genuine threat to their domestic dominance.

Following the brief 33-day spell of Wilfried Nancy, responsibility has fallen to Martin O’Neill to steady the ship and deliver another title. As part of that process, O’Neill is believed to be exploring attacking reinforcements, including at youth level, with Noonan emerging as a potential addition at Celtic Park.

Romano: Celtic submit bid for Michael Noonan

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Hoffenheim remain in advanced negotiations for the Shamrock Rovers striker, but Celtic have now entered the fray by submitting an official bid within the last 24 hours. The Scottish champions have previously enjoyed success recruiting from Shamrock Rovers — with Liam Scales and Johnny Kenny both making an impact — and Noonan could be the latest talent to follow that path.

Hoffenheim are understood to be eager to finalise a deal quickly in order to fend off Celtic’s interest, but the Hoops’ late move has ensured the contest remains very much alive.

Celtic’s attacking options have been stretched following the summer departure of Adam Idah, and while Noonan is unlikely to provide an immediate solution, his long-term potential is highly regarded. At just 17, the forward already boasts an impressive scoring record and is viewed as an investment for the future.

One for tomorrow, but problems today

Noonan, who celebrated his 17th birthday in July, has already netted six goals in 31 League of Ireland appearances. The teenager has previously attracted interest from Manchester City and made headlines last February when he became the youngest goalscorer in Conference League history.

Despite the excitement around Noonan’s potential, Celtic’s need for goals remains a pressing issue. Summer arrivals Shin Yamada and Kelechi Iheanacho have yet to convince, while the exits of Idah and Nicolas Kühn have left the squad short in attacking firepower.

If Celtic are to reclaim control of the title race, O’Neill may need to address those shortcomings sooner rather than later.
