Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho praised his team’s second-half display after they secured a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
The hosts had reason for optimism, having recorded their only league win of the season against Pompey earlier in September, but Adrian Segecic’s goal after the break proved decisive.
Mousinho admitted his side struggled before half-time, conceding they were careless in possession and second best for spells, although neither team created many clear chances. He felt Portsmouth showed a marked improvement after the interval, particularly once they had taken the lead.
While he believed his team could have been more ruthless in attack, Mousinho was pleased with how comfortably they managed the game defensively, noting goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid was rarely tested as Pompey saw the match out professionally.
The Portsmouth boss also acknowledged the challenge Sheffield Wednesday posed despite their difficult season.
He stressed that Hillsborough remains a tough venue and warned against underestimating an opponent capable of changing a game with a single mistake. Mousinho added that his players stayed focused throughout, which allowed them to leave with what he described as three vital points.
