Rangers have been strongly linked with a move for Motherwell forward Tawanda Maswanhise during the current transfer window.
Danny Rohl is understood to be targeting attacking reinforcements at Ibrox, and the Fir Park striker would arrive with an impressive goalscoring record. Maswanhise has found the net 15 times in 27 appearances this season, marking a breakout campaign for the 23-year-old.
While Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic exit earlier this season ended controversially, the former Hoops boss is well acquainted with Maswanhise’s abilities from a previous role. Rodgers was in charge at Leicester City when the forward was developing within the club’s youth ranks and has previously spoken highly of his potential.
Back in 2021, Rodgers said: “He’s a young player I like. I’ve seen him playing for the Under-18s, he’s quick, he’s direct. He’s got a lot of strengths and a lot of potential, but a lot of work to do.”
Those comments underline why Maswanhise is now attracting interest north of the border.
Motherwell’s stance remains uncertain, with reports suggesting the club are surprised by the Rangers links and eager to retain one of their standout performers. However, if Rohl’s side were able to strike a deal and bring the forward to Govan this month, it could significantly strengthen their title push.
Rangers have struggled for goals from key attacking options this season, with Bojan Miovski, Youssef Chermiti and Danilo managing just nine league goals between them. By contrast, Maswanhise has already scored 10 times in the Premiership alone, showing a consistency the Ibrox side have lacked.
Adding a proven scorer of his form could dramatically alter the title race, potentially placing Rangers in a commanding position as they look to chase down Hearts. Rodgers’ earlier assessment offers a reminder of the talent available, and Rangers may feel the time is right to act on it.
Securing one of Scottish football’s most in-form attackers would likely require a significant outlay, but it could prove decisive if completed before the window closes.
