Frank Lampard future at Coventry City in doubt amid Crystal Palace interest

Coventry City could face uncertainty over Frank Lampard’s future, with the manager reportedly emerging as a leading candidate to replace Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace.

According to talkSPORT, Palace are beginning to draw up a shortlist of potential successors for Glasner after the Austrian confirmed he will not extend his current contract. The 51-year-old delivered a historic FA Cup triumph for the club last season and is currently guiding them through a Conference League campaign.

However, questions over his future at Selhurst Park have intensified following an outspoken reaction to Saturday’s 2-1 defeat against Sunderland, during which Glasner suggested his squad felt unsupported. Palace currently sit 13th in the Premier League but remain within touching distance of the European places, trailing fifth by just seven points.

Palace admire Lampard

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish is understood to be a strong admirer of Lampard, who has impressed since taking charge at Coventry. The Sky Blues are among the favourites for automatic promotion from the Championship, a rise that has not gone unnoticed by the Premier League club.

While Glasner is still expected to see out the remainder of the season, Palace are planning ahead for the summer. Alongside Lampard, Getafe’s José Bordalás and Rayo Vallecano boss Iñigo Pérez are also believed to be under consideration. Should internal issues escalate, the Eagles may even be forced into acting sooner than anticipated.

Lampard has been in charge at the CBS Arena since November 2024 and has received widespread praise for his impact. He guided Coventry into the play-offs last season, only for defeat to Sunderland to end their promotion hopes.

This campaign has been even more impressive, with Coventry currently sitting top of the Championship table, six points clear of Middlesbrough after 27 matches.

Potential blow for Coventry

A move to Crystal Palace would represent an attractive opportunity for Lampard, regardless of whether he secures promotion with Coventry. Palace are an established Premier League side with ambitions of European qualification and potential continental football again in the coming seasons.

For Coventry, losing Lampard would be a significant setback. Their focus remains on consolidating their position and building long-term stability, something far less guaranteed than Palace’s top-flight status. With Lampard’s reputation arguably at its peak, the Sky Blues’ hierarchy may face a difficult task in persuading him to stay.

Owner Doug King could therefore be under pressure to act decisively in the months ahead to fend off growing interest in his manager.
