Rangers suffer transfer blow as Celtic hijack deal and agree personal terms

So far in the January transfer window, Rangers have had the upper hand over Celtic. Danny Rohl’s side have already secured three new signings, while Martin O’Neill’s Hoops have struggled to bring in reinforcements to reignite their Scottish Premiership title challenge.

Celtic recently made a bold attempt to sign Joel Piroe from Leeds United, part of the 49ers Enterprises group, but that move was quickly rejected.

Meanwhile, Rangers were linked with Borussia Monchengladbach striker Tomas Cvancara on 20 January, but it now appears that Celtic are set to land the 25-year-old Czech forward. German journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Celtic are in advanced negotiations with Cvancara, who has reportedly already agreed personal terms. A loan-to-buy deal is believed to be on the table.

This represents a major setback for Rangers. Not only were they interested in Cvancara, but Celtic’s capture of the striker comes after the 49ers’ ownership blocked Piroe’s move — leaving Rangers without a Plan B. If Cvancara turns out to be the difference-maker, it will highlight a significant failure for the Light Blues, particularly given their strikers’ struggles this season, with just nine league goals shared between Danilo, Bojan Miovski, and Youssef Chermiti.

Rohl now faces the urgent task of identifying a new forward target to respond to Celtic’s business. Ideally, this player would outperform Cvancara and give Rangers the upper hand in the title race.

While Rangers began the transfer window strongly, the closing stages could prove just as decisive. The Gers will need to act quickly to secure reinforcements and ensure they do not lose ground to their fierce rivals.
