The Celtic manager has defended assistant Mark Fotheringham after Derek McInnes criticised an “inexperienced coach” during the touchline clash at Tynecastle.
Martin O’Neill confirmed Fotheringham was the staff member involved in the exchange with the Hearts bench following Celtic’s opener in the 2-2 draw.
McInnes admitted post-match that he was frustrated by the behaviour of a member of the Hoops backroom team, describing him as inexperienced.
O’Neill rejected that label, insisting Fotheringham has a strong coaching background in Germany and significant experience working alongside Felix Magath, including helping a club avoid relegation.
The Celtic boss also reiterated his frustration over Auston Trusty’s red card, saying he did not believe the incident met the “clear and obvious” threshold for VAR intervention.
He added that he had been encouraged by support from former referees who shared his view, though he accepted the appeal outcome.
O’Neill further responded to suggestions that Celtic rarely see red cards in Scotland, joking that the club’s disciplinary record has improved since his previous spell in charge.
He questioned the growing influence of VAR, saying it now feels like it is refereeing matches, while stressing his comments were not aimed at match officials personally.
