Rangers look set to miss out on Southampton striker Cameron Archer, with a separate Saints deal now blocking his potential move to Ibrox.
Danny Rohl is still keen to strengthen his squad before the transfer window shuts and had identified Archer as a key loan target. However, that switch is now expected to collapse because Archer’s team-mate Adam Armstrong is on the verge of joining Wolves.
The Midlands club have agreed a £7m fee plus add-ons for Armstrong, who is due to replace Jorgen Strand Larsen at Molineux following the latter’s move to Crystal Palace. Southampton had been willing to let Archer go, but Armstrong’s exit has changed the situation, with the Saints now reluctant to lose another forward.
Archer had been backed to make an impact, but his record in the Premier League last season was modest, scoring just twice in 35 appearances as Southampton were relegated and Russell Martin departed.
Rangers switched their focus to Archer after being dealt a setback in their pursuit of Leeds United’s Joel Piroe, who is understood to have no interest in a move to Glasgow.
As a result, Southampton are now expected to keep Archer for the rest of the campaign, hoping the 24-year-old can deliver more in the months ahead. He has scored two goals in 19 Championship outings this season, with Saints struggling to meet their promotion ambitions.
