Birmingham City opted not to pursue a deal for free agent midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain when the opportunity arose, with the experienced midfielder now on course to join Celtic instead.
The former Arsenal and Liverpool man has been without a club since parting ways with Besiktas at the end of August. Although Birmingham were mentioned as a potential destination late in the summer transfer window, the club ultimately looked elsewhere to strengthen their midfield options.
A January move for Oxlade-Chamberlain was never seriously on the cards for Blues, who instead moved to secure Colombian midfielder Jhon Solis from Girona.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, 32, has not featured in a competitive match since May 2025, but he is now closing in on a return to action. According to Sky Sports, he is expected in Glasgow to complete a short-term deal with Celtic that will run until the end of the season.
Celtic are currently being overseen on an interim basis by Martin O’Neill following the unsuccessful stint under Wilfried Nancy.
The Scottish champions remain firmly in the hunt for the Premiership title, battling it out with Hearts and arch-rivals Rangers in a tightly contested race.
