Keith Hackett reacts after bizarre Rangers vs Queen’s Park incident

Rangers were awarded a penalty in the first half against Queen’s Park during the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup on Sunday.

The match at Ibrox saw Danny Rohl’s side cruise to an 8-0 victory over the William Hill Championship side. Ryan Naderi scored on his full debut in the eighth minute, setting the tone as Rangers capitalized on some poor defending.

James Tavernier completed a first-half hat-trick, with his third goal coming from the penalty spot after a handball by Roddy MacGregor. Callum Davidson expressed sympathy for MacGregor, noting that Andreas Skov Olsen’s goal-bound volley struck the player from very close range.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, Davidson said, “It just hit Roddy on the arm from about a yard away. I don’t think there’s much he could do. Sometimes these rules baffle me.”

After a brief VAR review, the referee’s decision stood, and Tavernier converted the penalty. While Davidson questioned the call slightly, former referee Keith Hackett maintained it was correct, citing MacGregor’s unnatural position.

Regardless, the penalty had little impact on the outcome, with Queen’s Park suffering a heavy defeat.
