Celtic are reportedly considering a high-profile and unexpected managerial option if Ange Postecoglou turns down the chance to return to the club.
According to reports, the Hoops are interested in appointing former Real Madrid and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho as their next permanent manager at the end of the season, should Postecoglou decline an approach to replace current interim boss Martin O’Neill.
O’Neill stepped back into the role on a short-term basis in January following Wilfried Nancy’s departure. The 73-year-old had previously held the job earlier in the campaign before a managerial reshuffle saw Nancy take charge, only for another change to follow weeks later.
Postecoglou remains a dream option for many at Celtic Park after his hugely successful spell between 2021 and 2023. During his two seasons in Glasgow, he delivered multiple domestic trophies, including two league titles, two League Cups and a Scottish Cup, while also restoring the club’s attacking identity and European competitiveness.
However, fresh claims suggest Celtic are also weighing up Mourinho as a potential alternative. The veteran coach, now 63, has managed some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea and Inter Milan, and is described as a “shock candidate” in the report.
Celtic’s stature, global support and regular involvement in European competition are said to be factors that could appeal to Mourinho. It has even been suggested he might be willing to reduce his salary demands for the opportunity.
Links between Mourinho and Celtic have surfaced before. Former Hoops striker Chris Sutton once indicated there had been substance to previous rumours of contact, though he questioned whether such a move would materialise.
Mourinho himself has spoken positively about Scottish football in the past. In 2025, while managing Fenerbahce, he said he would not rule out working in Scotland in the future, praising the passion surrounding clubs like Celtic and Rangers and the atmosphere their supporters create.
For now, Postecoglou remains the preferred choice for many supporters, but if a reunion fails to happen, Celtic’s search could take a dramatic and unexpected turn.
