Rangers find themselves firmly involved in a gripping Scottish Premiership title battle, but Chris Sutton has made it clear who he believes still holds the advantage.
The Ibrox side are currently second in the table, sitting three points behind leaders Hearts and beginning to apply serious pressure. Celtic trail by another three points, although they do have a game in hand on the teams above them.
Sutton still backing Hearts
When Danny Rohl replaced Russell Martin, few would have predicted Rangers would end up in the title picture. The German coach took charge with the club languishing in sixth place, 13 points behind Hearts. Since then, he has overseen a dramatic turnaround, steadily reducing the gap and restoring belief.
Despite Rangers collecting 10 more points than Hearts during Rohl’s tenure, former Celtic forward Sutton insists the Edinburgh side remain favourites.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Sutton was asked who he sees as front-runners and responded: “Hearts still, just.” He also highlighted a growing tension at Ibrox as supporters sense a real opportunity to challenge for the title.
Sutton noted that Rohl himself has mentioned the crowd becoming anxious at times, a reflection of both heightened expectations and the pressure of closing in on top spot. He described the race as shaping up to be “incredible.”
Crucial fixtures ahead
Debate over who leads the race may continue, but Rangers’ upcoming schedule could provide clarity soon.
In the weeks ahead, they face all three other top-four sides in what looks like a defining spell. A trip to Motherwell comes first, followed by a major home clash with Hearts. After that, Rohl’s team travel to Livingston before the Old Firm showdown with Celtic at the start of March.
Should Rangers manage to win all four matches, they would likely surge to the top of the standings and place themselves in pole position to secure their first league title since 2021.
