Alex Neil has warned that Millwall must guard against complacency when they travel to troubled Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
The Owls are currently in administration and staring at the possibility of relegation, sitting on minus seven points and enduring a miserable run of form. Wednesday have lost eight games in a row, failed to score since Boxing Day and have managed just one league win all season, leaving them still in negative territory after an 18-point deduction.
Their difficulties have been compounded by key departures, with long-serving captain Barry Bannan joining Millwall in January after more than a decade at Hillsborough. Bailey Cadamarteri and Yan Valery have also moved on.
Despite those struggles, Neil is adamant the contest should not be treated as a foregone conclusion.
“We’re not going to get carried away,” he told NewsAtDen. “Football has a way of bringing you back down to earth very quickly. The moment you think everything is going perfectly and you’re flying, that’s when you slip up in a game people expect you to win.
“This weekend falls into that bracket. There will be an expectation that we just show up and take the points, but it doesn’t work like that.
“It will be a difficult game. They won’t want to lose, especially after a heavy defeat last time out.
“We had to work incredibly hard to edge the home fixture 1-0, and it could be the same again. We’ll need to put in a big shift to come away with the win.”
