Former FIFA referee Mark Clattenburg believes Rangers were correctly denied a penalty during their draw with Motherwell at Fir Park.
The flashpoint came when Youssef Chermiti went down in the box under pressure from Elliott Watt and Paul McGinn. Despite Rangers appeals, referee Steven McLean waved play on, and VAR official John Beaton did not intervene.
Clattenburg supported that decision, insisting the contact did not warrant a spot-kick.
“There was contact, but I’m not convinced it was enough to send him to ground,” he said. “I understand the referee letting play continue, and this isn’t something VAR should step in on.”
Rangers had been ahead through Nico Raskin at the time, but Motherwell later equalised via Stephen Welsh — despite playing with 10 men after Lukas Fadinger was sent off following a VAR review for a foul on Mikey Moore.
That dismissal came after Beaton advised McLean to re-examine the challenge, upgrading the original booking to a red card.
The match also featured a handball scare at the other end when John Souttar slipped and the ball struck his arm as Callum Slattery shot, but no penalty was given.
