Agreement reached as Lorenzo Pellegrini agrees to succeed Sandro Tonali at Newcastle

Newcastle United could already have a potential successor lined up for Sandro Tonali, with reports in Italy claiming Lorenzo Pellegrini has agreed to join the club this summer.

The Roma midfielder, 29, is due to become a free agent at the end of the season when his current contract expires. According to Calciomercato, negotiations over a renewal in Rome have stalled, opening the door for Newcastle to secure his signature on a free transfer.

The development comes amid uncertainty surrounding Tonali’s future. Arsenal have been linked with the Italian international, raising the prospect that Newcastle may have to prepare for his departure despite his strong performances at St James’ Park.

Pellegrini’s name has emerged somewhat unexpectedly, with other midfielders previously mentioned in connection with the Magpies. Nonetheless, it would make sense for the club to explore multiple options as they plan ahead.

Tonali remains a key figure, particularly for his ball-winning qualities, even if his all-round statistical profile differs from players such as Declan Rice or Martin Zubimendi.
