South Yorkshire Police has released a statement ahead of this weekend’s Steel City Derby, as Sheffield United prepare to host Sheffield Wednesday in the final Blades v Owls showdown of the season.
The fiercely anticipated clash returns to Bramall Lane on Sunday, February 22, with a midday kick-off. Regardless of league position or recent form, the Steel City Derby remains the standout fixture in Sheffield’s football calendar, rarely short of drama or intensity.
This season has been a turbulent one for both clubs. Wednesday’s campaign has been overshadowed by administration and a significant points deduction, while United have spent much of the 2025/26 Championship season stuck in the lower reaches of mid-table.
Chief Inspector Jonathan Greaves confirmed that preparations are well underway to ensure the occasion passes safely. He stressed that officers have been working closely with both clubs and the local authority in the build-up to the fixture.
“Our number one priority is making sure residents and visitors can enjoy the derby safely,” he said. “There will be an increased and visible policing presence throughout the day.
“Our officers are there to support the public and address any concerns. We encourage anyone who needs assistance to approach them.”
With heightened security measures in place and emotions certain to run high, all eyes now turn to Bramall Lane for what promises to be another intense chapter in Sheffield’s biggest rivalry.
