Keith Jackson believes there are several compelling reasons why Rangers F.C. should step up their pursuit of Luke Graham following fresh transfer links.
The Ibrox side are reportedly keen on the Dundee centre-back, who has caught the eye under Steven Pressley at Dens Park. However, Rangers are aware that rival interest could complicate any potential move.
With defensive reinforcements likely needed this summer — particularly with loan players returning to their parent clubs and certain contracts running down — strengthening at the back is expected to be a priority.
That makes the interest in Graham understandable, even if the club’s recruitment team have drawn up a broader shortlist of centre-half targets. Jackson is convinced, though, that landing the 22-year-old would represent an immediate upgrade in quality and depth.
The young defender enhanced his reputation with a strong showing at Ibrox earlier this season, despite Dundee suffering a 3-0 defeat. Graham completed the full 90 minutes and, in Jackson’s view, was arguably let down by those around him rather than being at fault himself.
There has also been reported interest from Celtic F.C., while Portsmouth previously saw a £1 million bid rejected during the January window. Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live, Jackson suggested both sides of the Old Firm should be considering a move — particularly with homegrown quotas for European competition in mind.
He described Graham as “classy” and “composed” beyond his years, highlighting his physical presence and commanding style. It’s little surprise, Jackson argued, that Dundee were unwilling to accept what was viewed as a cut-price offer.
The discussion also raises questions about John Souttar, whose contract situation remains unresolved. While Souttar’s statistical ratings may appear stronger on the surface, context is key. Rangers benefit from a more dominant defensive structure, often conceding fewer chances, whereas Graham has impressed despite operating in a side under greater pressure.
In several core defensive metrics, Graham compares favourably, suggesting he could be a smart, forward-thinking addition rather than a headline-grabbing signing. For Rangers, the move could prove both practical and progressive as they reshape their backline ahead of the new campaign.
