Sheffield Wednesday F.C. have confirmed the signing of Seny Dieng ahead of their showdown with Sheffield United F.C. in the Steel City derby

Sheffield Wednesday F.C. have moved swiftly to solve their goalkeeping crisis by sealing the emergency loan signing of Seny Dieng ahead of Sunday’s Steel City derby against Sheffield United F.C..

The Owls were dealt another setback earlier this week when QPR loanee Murphy Cooper suffered a muscle problem that required a scan, ultimately ruling him out of the trip to Bramall Lane and potentially further fixtures. With first-choice keeper Pierce Charles already sidelined for over a month with a shoulder injury, Wednesday were left without a fit senior goalkeeper.

Acting quickly, the club secured Dieng from Middlesbrough F.C. on a seven-day emergency loan. The 31-year-old arrives with significant Championship pedigree, having made more than 150 appearances in the division. He was recently left out of Boro’s 25-man squad after a proposed move to Feyenoord fell through on deadline day.

This marks the second time this season Wednesday have turned to the emergency loan market for goalkeeping cover. Earlier in the campaign, Ethan Horvath’s red card against Charlton forced the club to draft in Joe Lumley from Bristol City on a short-term basis.

Under English Football League regulations, Dieng must start every match during the seven-day agreement. That means he is set to feature not only in the derby but also in Wednesday’s midweek clash with Norwich City F.C. at Carrow Road.

Dieng will become the seventh different player to appear in goal for Wednesday this season, underlining the scale of their injury troubles between the posts.
