Birmingham City have seen their hopes of reaching the Championship play-offs suffer a setback after a difficult week of results.
Just days earlier, the Blues had celebrated a statement 2-1 victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road — their first win there in 24 years — against a side revitalised under Philippe Clement.
That result extended Birmingham’s unbeaten league run to seven matches and left them just two points behind sixth-placed Wrexham. However, consecutive defeats to Millwall and Middlesbrough have widened the gap to eight points with 11 games remaining.
Manager Chris Davies admitted after the 3-1 loss to Middlesbrough that his side would now need an exceptional run of form to break into the top six.
Davies’ spell at St Andrew’s has been a mixed one. While he guided the club to a record-breaking League One campaign last season with 111 points, questions remain about whether he is the right figure to lead the club toward its long-term ambitions under owner Tom Wagner.
Despite Davies receiving strong backing — including six winter signings and the permanent capture of Patrick Robertsfrom Sunderland — criticism has continued to grow.
Birmingham City fan pundit Jason Moore argued that Davies lacks the tactical edge required to compete with top Championship managers and believes the squad should be performing better given the investment made.
Moore claimed Birmingham’s squad is stronger than those of Millwall, Hull and Wrexham but said the team’s performances suggest Davies has fallen short.
He also criticised the manager’s tactical flexibility, arguing that Davies relies too heavily on one system and lacks an effective backup plan.
Moore concluded that he would not be surprised if the club’s ownership decides to part ways with Davies in the summer should Birmingham fail to reach the play-offs.
