Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard tipped to replace Danny Rohl in bold new Rangers prediction

Radio host Ewen Cameron has suggested that either Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard could replace Danny Rohl at Rangers when the season ends.

Rohl is facing mounting scrutiny after Rangers were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by fierce rivals Celtic. The defeat leaves the Ibrox side with only the Scottish Premiership to focus on for the remainder of the campaign.

However, their title challenge has also taken a hit. Rangers currently sit six points behind leaders Heart of Midlothian and recently dropped below Celtic in the table after throwing away a two-goal advantage in the Old Firm clash at Ibrox on 1 March.

Gerrard and Lampard tipped as possible successors

Although Rohl has been credited with guiding Rangers back into contention during a difficult period, his spell has yet to reach the heights achieved during Gerrard’s tenure.

Gerrard famously delivered Rangers’ first league title in a decade during his first senior managerial role before leaving Ibrox to take charge of Aston Villa in November 2021. The former Liverpool captain is currently without a club and reportedly held discussions with Rangers about a potential return last October, though he ultimately opted against taking the job at that time.

Lampard, on the other hand, has impressed in England with Coventry City, earning praise for his work with the Championship side. Cameron believes the former England international could also emerge as a strong candidate for the Rangers post.

Speaking on the STV Radio Football Show, Cameron claimed:

“Danny Rohl shouldn’t be the manager of Rangers. I think he’s been fortunate at times and has managed to escape serious criticism.

“My feeling is that he won’t still be in charge by the summer. I think either Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard will be sitting in the Ibrox dugout when the new season begins.”

Despite the speculation, Rangers have given no public indication that they are considering a managerial change. Much could depend on how the team performs in the final stretch of the campaign.

Rangers should continue backing Rohl

Supporters have started questioning Rohl’s leadership after consecutive disappointments against Celtic, with Rangers managing just one victory in their last five outings.

Club figures such as Andrew Cavenagh and the investment group 49ers Enterprises showed strong support for the German coach during the winter transfer window, and they will be expecting results to improve.

Nevertheless, Rohl has demonstrated qualities that suggest he could still guide Rangers forward. He has restored unity within the squad and made progress in stabilising the team’s performances.

The main concern has been a number of puzzling tactical calls and selection choices that have undermined that progress. The 36-year-old will need to address those issues quickly.

If he can learn from those mistakes, there is little reason why Rangers should not continue with him into next season.
