Martin O’Neill provides latest Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney injury update

Celtic F.C. supporters were surprised to see captain Callum McGregor and defender Kieran Tierney missing from the squad for Sunday’s derby against Rangers F.C. at Ibrox Stadium.

There had been little indication beforehand that McGregor was dealing with a fitness issue, while Tierney had been considered a doubt after taking a heavy challenge in the previous match.

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s fixture, Celtic manager Martin O’Neill explained that McGregor felt discomfort following the midweek trip to Aberdeen F.C., which ultimately forced him out of the derby squad.

McGregor doubtful for Motherwell clash

Celtic now prepare to host Motherwell F.C. at Celtic Park on Saturday, but O’Neill admitted the club captain is unlikely to feature.

Meanwhile, Tierney could still make a return in time for the match, with the manager suggesting the defender currently has a better chance of being available.

Speaking to Celtic TV, O’Neill said:

“Certainly, Kieran would have a better chance. He would have a better chance at this minute. But we’ll see.

Callum’s been a terrific leader in the team. It’s remarkable he’s been here for 25 years. He’s been an incredible player for the club and an incredible captain. The sooner we can get him back on the field, the better for us.”

Positive signs for Celtic captain

Despite McGregor’s likely absence this weekend, the update suggests the injury may not be a serious long-term concern.

Celtic will be hoping their captain recovers quickly, particularly with important fixtures ahead against Heart of Midlothian F.C. and Rangers in the coming weeks.

If McGregor cannot return against Motherwell, the expectation is that he could be back in contention after the upcoming international break as Celtic push toward the decisive stage of the season. ⚽
