Five Championship prospects Coventry City should keep for a potential Premier League campaign

Coventry City appear to be closing in on a return to the Premier League, and with that prospect comes the exciting transfer opportunities that promotion would inevitably create. The Sky Blues have not mathematically secured their place in the top flight yet, but the numbers are already heavily in their favour. According to Opta’s projections, Coventry currently hold a remarkable 98% probability of promotion, a statistic that highlights just how strong their position has become.

Frank Lampard is unlikely to openly discuss the matter while the job is still unfinished, but behind the scenes it would be surprising if Coventry were not already considering how their squad might evolve for the challenges of the Premier League. The step up in quality between the Championship and England’s top division is enormous, and the club will almost certainly need reinforcements in several areas. At the same time, there will be careful thought about which players already performing in the Championship could step up with them.

Realistically, there are very few positions where Coventry would not consider either improving quality or strengthening depth. One area that may require less urgent attention is right-back, although even there the club will want to ensure they have players capable of handling the pace and technical ability of Premier League wingers. Bringing Carl Rushworthback in some capacity would certainly help strengthen the squad. The 24-year-old has spent a good portion of the season operating at right-back, but while he has performed admirably in that role, there may still be doubts about how comfortable he would be dealing with some of the league’s elite wide attackers week after week.

Where Rushworth could arguably offer even greater value is in central defence. Standing at 6ft 4in, he possesses the physical presence that top-flight teams demand, and he also combines that size with strong positional awareness and solid technical ability. Brentford initially brought him to England from France, and he impressed during a loan spell with Exeter City in League One. His performances there were strong enough to raise eyebrows when the Bees eventually decided to sell him to Millwall. Rushworth’s ability to dominate aerially and contribute in both penalty areas would be valuable traits for a Coventry side aiming to compete in the Premier League.

Another player who could attract Coventry’s attention is Joe Gelhardt. The versatile forward, capable of playing either as an attacking midfielder or a second striker, is currently on loan at Hull City from Leeds United. There has already been speculation that Hull may attempt to secure him on a permanent deal next season. However, his long-term future remains uncertain.

Gelhardt is still under contract at Leeds, but if the club manages to stay in the Premier League they may decide to pursue more established attacking options rather than allowing the 23-year-old to continue developing at the highest level. For Coventry, that could create an opportunity. Gelhardt is known for his physicality, technical ability and relentless work rate, while his instinct around goal makes him a constant threat. With 13 goals and four assists this season, he has shown he can be highly productive in the Championship. His partnership with Oli McBurnie has also demonstrated his ability to operate effectively alongside a traditional striker. For Lampard, Gelhardt could provide a different attacking option and offer competition or support for Jack Rudoni.

Out wide, Coventry might also consider a move for Romain Esse, a player who has become one of the most talked-about young talents in the Championship. The Millwall winger has emerged as a standout performer in a team that is typically known for its physical and direct style of play. Operating primarily on the right flank, Esse has attracted attention from clubs such as Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Brentford.

Coventry could potentially offer him something those clubs might not immediately guarantee: regular Premier League football. A move to the Sky Blues would also create an intriguing competition on the wing with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto. Esse has already showcased his quality with some eye-catching moments this season, including a spectacular strike against Birmingham City and a perfectly weighted assist against Hull City that set up Mihailo Ivanovic. Those moments highlight both his shooting ability and his creativity in the final third.

Another winger who could be worth considering is Femi Azeez, who joined Millwall from Reading a couple of seasons ago. Azeez has quietly produced an impressive campaign, registering eight goals and seven assists in 28 appearances. His pace and directness make him a dangerous wide player, and he could add another dimension to Coventry’s attack.

Meanwhile, Abdul Fatawu of Leicester City represents another intriguing option. The Ghanaian winger struggled with injuries during his first opportunity in the Premier League last season, limiting his chances to make a real impact. However, his talent is undeniable, and a fully fit Fatawu could offer explosive pace and creativity out wide.

Up front, Coventry are almost certain to look for additional options. The reality, however, is that there is no obvious goal-scoring machine dominating the Championship this season. Swansea City striker Žan Vipotnik currently leads the scoring charts and, at just 23 years old, there is still plenty of room for development. The question for potential Premier League suitors is whether he possesses the athleticism to complement his obvious strength and finishing ability.

Another player who has impressed is Patrick Agyemang at Derby County. Initially used on the left side of attack before moving centrally, the 25-year-old has scored 10 goals this season. While he is still a developing player, his athleticism and aerial presence make him an interesting prospect for a team looking to add physicality to its forward line.

Millwall striker Mihailo Ivanovic has also shown flashes of promise, scoring eight goals in 28 appearances at just 21 years old. However, there may still be questions about whether he is ready to make the leap to Premier League football at this stage of his career.

As for more experienced strikers, names like Kieffer Moore, Oli McBurnie and Adam Armstrong remain effective at Championship level. However, each of them has already had opportunities in the Premier League and struggled to establish themselves consistently.

For Coventry, the challenge will be identifying players who not only perform well in the Championship but also possess the attributes required to succeed at the next level. If promotion does arrive as expected, recruitment decisions like these could play a crucial role in determining whether the Sky Blues merely survive in the Premier League — or truly establish themselves there.
