Martin O’Neill provides Callum McGregor injury update ahead of Motherwell clash
Martin O’Neill has confirmed that Callum McGregor will miss Celtic’s upcoming match against Motherwell F.C. after picking up a calf strain.
The Celtic F.C. captain had already missed training earlier in the week, sparking concerns over whether he would be fit enough to feature in the fixture. Those doubts have now been confirmed by the manager, who revealed that the midfielder will sit out the game while he continues his recovery.
McGregor’s absence leaves a noticeable gap in Celtic’s midfield. The Scotland international is typically the player who dictates the tempo of the team’s play, often dropping deep to receive possession from the defence before helping move the ball forward into attacking areas. When he is unavailable, the responsibility for controlling that rhythm must be shared by others.
The holding midfield role at Celtic involves far more than simply distributing the ball. The player operating in that position must also be quick to recognise danger when possession is lost and help protect the defence by closing down space in front of the centre-backs.
Speaking about the situation, O’Neill explained the nature of the injury and dismissed speculation that it could be related to McGregor’s previous Achilles problem.
“Callum will miss the game,” O’Neill said, speaking to The Herald.
“It’s a calf strain. My physio mentioned it to me this morning. I think there have been rumours going around that it’s something else, but it has nothing to do with that. Last season he had an Achilles injury — this is just a calf issue.
“I’m hopeful, very hopeful. He’s done really well with his recovery so far and we’re optimistic that he could be back maybe next week.”
O’Neill was quick to reassure supporters that the injury does not appear to be serious, emphasising that McGregor is already making good progress in his recovery programme.
If that timeline holds, the midfielder could potentially return for Celtic’s next league fixture against Dundee United F.C.next Sunday. That schedule gives McGregor another week to regain full fitness before being considered for selection again.
In the meantime, O’Neill will have to adjust his midfield setup for the clash with Motherwell. Other players will need to step up and take on the responsibility of linking defence and attack while maintaining the tempo of Celtic’s play.
McGregor’s importance to the team often becomes even more obvious when he is missing from the lineup. His composure under pressure and ability to turn defence into attack allow Celtic to dominate possession and control matches.
If his recovery continues as expected, however, the captain’s spell on the sidelines may prove to be a brief one.
