Chris Davies reveals why he substituted Jack Robinson after strange moment against Sheffield United

Chris Davies explains why Jack Robinson was substituted after bizarre handball in draw with Sheffield United

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has explained why he decided to substitute defender Jack Robinson at half-time during his side’s 1–1 draw with Sheffield United at St Andrew’s Stadium.

The match was filled with drama and unusual moments, including a bizarre incident that resulted in a penalty for Sheffield United. Robinson handled the ball inside his own box after appearing to believe play had stopped, even placing the ball down as though preparing for a goal-kick while the match was still live.

With little option, referee Tim Robinson pointed to the spot and booked the Birmingham defender. Sydie Peck stepped up to take the penalty but failed to convert, allowing Birmingham to stay level.

Despite the unusual error, Davies revealed the half-time substitution had more to do with Robinson’s yellow card than the handball incident itself.

Davies explains tactical decision

Speaking after the match, Davies described the situation as strange but accepted that the penalty decision was correct.

He also praised goalkeeper James Beadle for quickly regaining his focus to deal with the penalty situation, while defender Christoph Klarer was credited for reacting well to clear the rebound.

Davies confirmed that Robinson’s booking ultimately influenced his decision to make a change at the interval, bringing on Jonathan Panzo.

The Birmingham boss explained that Robinson was the only player on a yellow card and there was a risk that another challenge could lead to a second booking. Removing him at half-time, Davies said, was a straightforward tactical move to avoid the possibility of his side being reduced to ten men.

Frustration after missed chances

The draw did little to boost the play-off ambitions of either side, despite Birmingham creating several chances to win the game.

Patrick Bamford cancelled out a superb free-kick from Marvin Ducksch in a hectic first half that also saw Femi Serikisent off for Sheffield United.

After the break, Birmingham pushed hard for a winner but were repeatedly denied by the woodwork. Ducksch struck the frame of the goal twice, while Ibrahim Osman also saw an effort hit the post.

Davies admitted his side were disappointed not to take advantage of their numerical superiority. He felt Birmingham started the match strongly and deserved their lead, but conceded that Sheffield United’s equaliser just before half-time shifted the momentum.

In the second half, Birmingham continued to press but could not find the decisive goal, leaving Davies and his players frustrated as they had to settle for a single point. ⚽
