Celtic star breaks silence on unexpected exits of Brendan Rodgers and John Kennedy

Celtic F.C. star lifts lid on “shock” Brendan Rodgers and John Kennedy exits

The late-night announcement that Brendan Rodgers had resigned sent shockwaves through Celtic F.C., with the decision confirmed after talks with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond.

In the immediate aftermath, Martin O’Neill stepped in to stabilise the club while a long-term replacement was sought. However, a brief and underwhelming spell under Wilfried Nancy saw O’Neill return for a second stint this season.

Although Rodgers’ departure now feels distant, it has only been a matter of months—and its impact is still being felt inside the dressing room.

Dane Murray reflects on “big shock”

One player directly affected by Rodgers’ exit is young defender Dane Murray, who had been handed a renewed opportunity under the former boss.

Rodgers showed faith in Murray by recalling him from Queen’s Park F.C. last season, giving him valuable game time. The 22-year-old was again called upon this campaign following an injury to Cameron Carter-Vickers, stepping up when needed.

Reflecting on the managerial upheaval, Murray admitted the sudden departures of Rodgers and long-serving coach John Kennedy caught everyone off guard.

“No one really saw it coming at the time,” he said.
“He was really good with me—the gaffer. I still call him the gaffer.
And Kendo as well. It was a big shock, but football moves on.”

Rodgers’ belief in Murray’s potential

Prior to his exit, Rodgers had been vocal about his admiration for Murray’s ability and long-term potential.

The former Celtic boss highlighted the defender’s physical attributes, composure on the ball, and high ceiling, while also noting areas for development—particularly concentration.

Rodgers’ faith was evident in the club’s decision to tie Murray down, with the manager convinced the youngster has what it takes to develop into a top-level defender.

Celtic pushing forward

Despite the disruption, Celtic have responded well on the pitch. Under O’Neill, they have climbed back into second place and now sit just two points behind league leaders Heart of Midlothian F.C..

For Murray and his teammates, the focus is now firmly on the present as they look to build momentum and mount a serious title challenge in the closing stages of the season.
