‘Disheartening’ – Keith Jackson reacts to Thelo Aasgaard offside decision involving Rangers

Keith Jackson casts doubt on Thelo Aasgaard offside call in Rangers win

Keith Jackson has admitted he remains unconvinced that Thelo Aasgaard was correctly ruled offside after reviewing the footage from Rangers F.C.’s narrow victory over St Mirren F.C..

Rangers kept their Scottish Premiership title hopes alive with a 1-0 win in Paisley, but it was far from convincing. Tuur Rommens’ goal proved decisive, though the match could have been put beyond doubt late on.

Aasgaard thought he had done just that after finishing from close range following a pass across goal from Mikey Moore. However, VAR intervened and ruled the goal out for offside — a decision that has since sparked debate.

Jackson questions VAR clarity

Speaking after the match, Jackson revealed he was left uneasy by the quality of the footage used to make the call.

He suggested that while the replay appeared to show an offside, the images themselves were not entirely convincing, raising concerns about the reliability of the decision.

Jackson also referenced a previous discussion with former referee Des Roache, which led him to question whether all camera angles used in VAR reviews are properly aligned.

“The picture quality didn’t look great,” he explained, adding that his confidence in the system has been slightly shaken after learning that not every angle may be perfectly calibrated.

Rangers get the job done — just

Despite the controversy, Rangers ultimately secured all three points — something that will matter most to Danny Röhland his players.

Still, the performance raised concerns. The Gers struggled to break down St Mirren for long periods and lacked the cutting edge needed to kill the game off earlier.

Aasgaard’s impact off the bench may give Röhl something to think about, particularly with crucial fixtures still to come.

No room for excuses in title race

While debate over the offside decision will continue, the bigger picture for Rangers is clear — they cannot rely on refereeing calls as they push for the title.

Over the course of a season, decisions tend to balance out, and matches are rarely defined by a single moment. Rangers will need to improve their overall performances if they are to maintain their challenge.

For now, the result keeps them firmly in the hunt — but displays like this suggest there is still plenty of work to be done.
