Rangers dressing room rocked as Danny Röhl sidelines first-team star

Danny Röhl makes ruthless call as Rangers F.C. loanee frozen out

Danny Röhl has reportedly made a brutal decision regarding Derek Cornelius, with the Rangers F.C. loanee banished from first-team involvement for the remainder of the season.

According to reports, the defender has been instructed to train with the club’s youth setup, effectively ending his chances of featuring again during his loan spell at Ibrox.

From promise to exile

Cornelius arrived from Olympique de Marseille in the summer and initially showed promise with a series of solid displays.

However, a hamstring injury suffered in November halted his progress, and he has not featured since. Despite recently returning to training, the Canadian international is still short of full match fitness.

Now, it appears Röhl has made a definitive call on his future—one that leaves Cornelius on the outside looking in.

No place in the run-in plans

With Rangers pushing hard in the title race—now just three points behind Heart of Midlothian F.C. after their win over St Mirren F.C.—the manager has seemingly finalised the group he trusts for the run-in.

Competition in defence has also worked against Cornelius. Players like Tuur Rommens, Dujon Sterling and Jayden Meghoma offer options out wide, while Emmanuel Fernandez, Nasser Djiga and John Souttar have established themselves centrally.

As a result, Cornelius has been deemed surplus to requirements.

Uncertain next step

The decision also raises questions about Cornelius’ immediate future. While he remains in contention for international duty under Jesse Marsch with Canada national soccer team, his lack of game time could be a concern.

For now, though, his time at Rangers appears all but over—cut short not just by injury, but by a decisive and uncompromising call from Röhl.
