Kasper Schmeichel has admitted his playing career could be over after receiving what he described as “devastating” injury news during his time at Celtic.
The veteran goalkeeper is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being told he requires two separate operations to repair serious damage to his shoulder. With his contract set to expire this summer and his 40th birthday approaching, there are growing fears that he may have already played his final match for the club—and possibly of his career.
Schmeichel’s shoulder troubles date back to an earlier injury sustained while representing Denmark national team against Portugal national team. Although he managed to continue playing at the time, the issue never fully healed and was made significantly worse during Celtic’s Europa League defeat to VfB Stuttgart.
Despite featuring shortly after in a domestic loss to Hibernian, the experienced shot-stopper has since learned the full extent of the damage. Medical assessments have revealed multiple injuries, including a torn bicep, rotator cuff damage, a dislocated shoulder, and a torn labrum—issues that could sideline him for up to a year.
Speaking about the situation, Schmeichel admitted the reality has been difficult to process. He revealed that the timeline for recovery, combined with his age, raises the possibility that he may never return to professional football.
The former Premier League winner described the injury as one of the toughest moments of his career, explaining that football has been central to his identity since childhood. Watching teammates prepare for matches while facing such uncertainty has only heightened the emotional toll.
However, Schmeichel has not completely given up hope. Determined to defy the odds, he insists he will commit fully to rehabilitation, even suggesting that a successful comeback would rank among the greatest achievements of his career.
For now, his focus remains on undergoing the first surgery and beginning the long road to recovery, while coming to terms with the possibility that his remarkable journey in football could be nearing its end.
